We loved our stay here! We booked the king bed patio room in Los Portales, and it did not disappoint. The bed was incredibly comfortable, and the shower had amazing water pressure and was just really nice. We took full advantage of the fireplace in our room too (December visit). The grounds and entire complex were beautiful, and we did a quick visit to the gardens and those were nice too! Highly recommend this gem!
This is was the best hotel experience in that part of Texas. The staff are amazing! The rooms are very nice. They really take great care of the hotel and the grounds. I would highly recommend this hotel if you are visiting Big Bend national park or just passing by. There is nothing as nice for a 100 miles.
Lovely hotel, grounds, staff… just everything. This was our first stop on a 4 night west Texas/Big Bend adventure and we can’t stop talking about the Gage Hotel and when we are going to make it back. Don’t forget to walk the gardens at sunset, breathtaking. So many details throughout the property, you can tell the pride in ownership. Originally we had planned to stop in Del Rio for a night until friends told us we MUST keep driving a little further and stay at the Gage instead. So glad we listened!
We stayed in the historic hotel room 6. What an experience. Checked in on Saturday there was live music on patio from 8-10 which we enjoyed from our air conditioned room. Stephanie, in concierge, arranged a charcuterie board and lovely bottle of Cabernet for our enjoyment after a long drive. They were perfect. They also called to see if they could assist in a dinner reservation which we thoroughly appreciated and loved our meal at 12 Gage. The fried spicy quail was amazing! The pool was a great way to end our days before dinner. We loved our stay and have discussed returning.
Room 22's toilet/shower "door" has broken handles and wouldn't lock (and people can still through a bit), but gorgeous ceilings, hanging chiles, and other touches throughout this hotel. Gym is very nice, but you'll walk along the street to get to it. (It's called a hotel but is really a motel, which is fine.)
Restaurant is super-pricey, so we spent $45 each (!) on the Bar menu (3 drinks and 4 meals). I'm afraid the chicken-fried steak had no taste (even after putting the mayo-heavy sauce on it.. so we assume the chefs forgot salt and pepper) and they ran out of their good burgers. But nachos and green beans and mashed potatoes were well done! (Chicken nachos had very little chicken (and too much sour cream.)
Almost all rooms face onto a courtyard where people sit and talk, kids run around, etc. So you'll need to run the shower fan to drown out those sounds.
Friendly staff. Love the nostalgia and history here. Everything the Gage is doing around town is inviting. Our king room was comfortable and well appointed. The lightening storm unfortunately during our stay knocked out our AC. The staff kindly moved us to a queen room and adjusted our bill. Always offered helpful tips and directions. I separately reviewed several of the attached places, but the 12 Gage, White Buffalo Bar, V6 Coffee, V6 Collectibles and Vault Brewery and BBQ were all great in there own ways. We will be back
The staff was so amazing. Special thanks to Stephanie, the concierge for helping us navigate the highlights of Big Bend in a day. If we are ever in Marathon again. No doubt we will stay here. Breakfast at Oasis a few doors down is highly recommended also.
I have stopped here at this iconic Henry C. Trost designed hotel many times on my way to and from the Big Bend region, but personally have never stayed at the hotel overnight (my parents have done so a time or two). It was a big photo opportunity for me to stop here in August 2016 and in January 2017 gathering material for my book "TEXAS BADLANDS: The Black and White Journey" (available on Amazon), which the Gage Hotel is covered extensively in Chapter 1 "Leaving the World Behind." It is one of the 3 most famous Trost-designed hotels all featured in the book.
If you have never been to Marathon, Texas and the Gage Hotel it is a must stop for all travelers to see. I highly recommend the Gage for ambitious travelers to stay at if they are traveling to Big Bend NP for the first time, a mere 40 miles to the main entrance at Persimmon Gap of a place like no other.
